Disney Why we own it: We value Disney for its best-in-class experiential entertainment Parks business, which has proven to have immense pricing power. In the second quarter, the combined business — Disney+, India's Disney+ Hotstar, Hulu and ESPN+ — saw losses of $18 million, far better than the $659 million loss in the year-ago period. DTC profitability benefited from Disney+ core subscriber growth, higher retail subscription prices, increased advertising revenue on the back of higher impressions, and lower distribution costs. Clearly, Disney still has a big opportunity in sports as they execute on their DTC streaming strategy for ESPN. Last year in the second quarter, Disney+ and Hulu lost $587 million. The thesis among all major legacy media companies has been that streaming will eventually take over for cable TV as the primary money-making engine. It's not just that Disney nearly made money in streaming — it's that the company's traditional linear TV results were awful. Next year, Disney will launch its flagship ESPN streaming service, which will allow consumers to subscribe to ESPN without cable at all. Looking at Disney's results in the second quarter, it's clear why the company has finally pulled the ripcord on ESPN.

Greg Sankey, the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, is the ultimate soft power player. Instead, he speaks opaquely, often requiring something like a college sports Kremlinologist to interpret his intentions. constitution and scoffing out of existence the possibility that the SEC would be shut out of the football playoff last season. Recently, he teamed up with the Big Ten commissioner, Tony Petitti, to leverage a deal that will award their conferences about 60 percent of the television revenue for the 12-team College Football Playoff that begins next year, leaving crumbs for everyone else. So, when Sankey told ESPN this month that it was time to rethink the N.C.A.A.

The extension includes $100,000 annual raises that will push Sarkisian's guaranteed salary to $10.9 million by the final year. According to the regents' agenda, the raises are a 78% overall increase in Sarkisian's guaranteed compensation. The Longhorns won the Big 12 in their final season in the league. ESPN and the College Football Playoff have agreed to a six-year deal worth $1.3 billion annually that allows the network to keep exclusive rights to the 12-team playoff through the 2031 season, two people with knowledge of the agreement told The Associated Press. ESPN was first to report the offer of $1.3 billion annually from the network to the CFP, and The Athletic first reported that an agreement had been reached on those terms. That deal pays the CFP $608 million for seven games annually: two playoff semifinals, a championship game and four other major bowl games. The conference commissioners who manage the playoff talked often about having multiple television partners as they tried to come to a consensus on expansion. Discovery and streaming platforms all expressed interest to CFP officials, but instead they are heading toward sticking with ESPN — though the network could sublicense some of the playoff games to other networks.

The Jim Harbaugh derby for NFL teams is about to heat up. A week after leading the University of Michigan to a national title in the College Football Playoff, Harbaugh will meet with the Los Angeles Chargers about their head coach vacancy this week, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. Harbaugh, who previously coached in the NFL, has a prior relationship with the Chargers and the Spanos family that owns it. To prepare for a possible NFL return, Harbaugh recently hired Don Yee as his new agent. Despite leading Michigan to its first national title since 1997, it was a frustrating year for Harbaugh.

The metaphorical white puffs of smoke sent up by the College Football Playoff selection committee on Sunday signaled that the panel had chosen the four teams that would vie for this season’s championship — and that Florida State, unbeaten champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference, was not among them. This caused smoke of a different sort to emanate from the Seminoles’ ears. Florida State’s résumé was hard to beat. The Seminoles began the season by walloping Louisiana State, which was led by the presumptive Heisman Trophy winner, quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Seminoles’ only shortcoming was being shorthanded: Their star quarterback, Jordan Travis, broke his leg last month against North Alabama.

For most of its more than 150 years of existence, college football has been defined as much by controversy and contention as what happened when a bunch of students squared off on the field. This is a sport where 34 national titles have been disputed or vacated—and sometimes both. Then, 10 years ago, the sport’s leaders decided to change all that. College football went from the murky selection process of the Bowl Championship Series era to a playoff format, allowing four teams to duke it out for the national title. The days of controversy were supposedly over.
